A question mark appearing above the dog in Creature Kitchen means the animal does not understand or accept the item you are presenting. The dog—identified in your creature album as Gray—only accepts dishes that meet his specific dietary preferences. Offering him desserts, raw items, non-beef meals, or improper ingredients causes confusion, prompting the question mark icon rather than an eating animation.
To clear the prompt and advance your friendship, you must prepare meals that strictly fulfill his criteria and present them without scaring him away.
Why Gray Shows a Question Mark
Gray is the skeletal, greyhound-like creature found roaming near the outdoor doghouse. When players hold up or toss an item that does not match his requirements, Gray will stare and display a question mark.
In gameplay testing, players observed the question mark under the following circumstances:
- Offering Sweets or Baked Goods: Presenting items like sugar cookies, blueberry pie, or pancakes will result in a question mark. Gray will not consume desserts.
- Offering Incorrect Food Categories: Breakfast dishes without beef (such as plain toast or a fried egg alone) or seafood intended for other creatures will be rejected.
- Unprocessed or Incomplete Items: Dropping raw ingredients on the ground instead of a fully cooked recipe from the oven will fail to register as a meal.
How to Summon and Identify Gray
Before you can feed the dog, you must summon him into the yard:
- Unlock the Shed: Feed Goober (the pantry creature) three Italian dishes to receive the diamond key, opening the shed outside (granting the Monachopsis achievement).
- Collect the Dog Toy: Inside the shed, pick up the squeaky dog bone toy.
- Lure the Dog: Take the toy out into the yard near the doghouse. Squeaking or tossing the toy coaxes the dog out into view.
- Take His Photo: Snap a picture with your camera to identify him as Gray in your field guide.
His creature guide entry notes:
"Very long. Just wants big dinner. I wonder if I can bring him inside. Not sure this is a dog."
"This thing's been here a long time. Is it still a dog house when there's not a dog around?"
His stated feeding requirement is: wants three meals with beef.
Valid Beef Recipes for Gray
Gray requires three beef-based dishes. You can cook these using the cabin's kitchen tools: combine raw steak and salt in the mixing bowl to produce ground beef, or fry raw steak in the frying pan until the popping stops and flip it to get a fried steak. Place the required ingredients into the oven and close the door to bake.
| Recipe Name | Required Ingredients | Preparation Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Burger | Ground beef, 1 cheese slice, 2 bread slices | Mix raw steak + salt in bowl for ground beef. Slice bread and cheese on cutting board. |
| Philly Cheesesteak | 1 fried steak, 1 cheese slice, 2 bread slices | Fry raw steak in the pan. Combine with sliced bread and cheese in the oven. |
| Meatball Sub | Ground beef, tomato sauce, 2 bread slices | Mix steak + salt for ground beef; mix whole tomato + salt in bowl for tomato sauce. |
| Meatloaf | Ground beef, tomato sauce | Combine prepared ground beef and tomato sauce in the oven. |
| Spaghetti and Meatballs | Ground beef, tomato sauce, pasta | Add pasta from the pantry to ground beef and tomato sauce. |
| Beef Burrito | Tortilla, 1 fried steak, chopped lettuce, 1 cheese slice | Tortillas are found in the shed; chop lettuce and cheese on the board. |
| Steak and Eggs | 1 fried steak, 1 fried egg, 1 potato slice | Fry both the steak and egg in the pan before putting them in the oven with sliced potato. |
| Beef Stew | Broth, 1 fried steak, 1 carrot slice, 1 potato slice | Requires carrots obtained from yard puzzles or garden mechanics. |
You do not need to hunt down rare ingredients like carrots if you do not have them yet. Remaking simpler dishes, such as the Burger, Philly Cheesesteak, or Meatloaf, still satisfies his requirement.
What to Do If the Dog Runs Away or Disappears
Tossing items directly against Gray or startling him can trigger his running animation. In some cases reported on the Steam community forums, accidentally throwing the wrong dish (such as a burrito thrown wildly) causes Gray to dash off the map completely.
If Gray is missing:
- Check the Porch and Hallways: Once Gray has eaten, he frequently runs up to the cabin's porch stairs or slips inside the kitchen/hallway to follow you around. Check the patio steps before assuming he vanished.
- Use the Dog Toy: Pick up the squeaky toy from the yard or shed and toss it near the doghouse to see if it triggers his pathfinding back to the yard.
- Restart the Session: As confirmed by players encountering this glitch on the Steam discussion boards, if Gray gets spooked and completely unloads from the game world, save and quit to desktop. Reloading the game resets creature spawns back to their default locations.
Reward for Completing Gray's Meals
After eating three approved beef meals, Gray will bark happily, gain zoomies, and drop a new room key onto the cabin's doorstep or patio steps.
Taking this key unlocks the Bathroom door down the hall. Entering the bathroom triggers the Chrysalism achievement and provides access to new items—including raw chicken, the plunger, colored beads, and the toilet fish needed for Gerald in the trees. Once Gray is fully befriended, you can also interact with him to pet him as he follows you around the cabin.
